Madeira (Madeira Portuguese, meaning wood) is a group of Portuguese islands in the North Atlantic. Consisting of two inhabited islands (Madeira and Porto Santo) and three uninhabited islands, forming together with Selvagens Ilhas (Islands Wild) Autonomous Region with its capital in Funchal Madeira. The archipelago is located about 580 km from the African coast and 860 km from Lisbon, the capital of Portugal. Madeira constitutuie an outermost region of the European Union.

On the island you can find places of worship with a few hundred years old: Igreja de Sao Joao Evangelista (1624), Igreja de Sao Pedro (about 1600), Igreja Paroquial of Machico (about 1425-1499), da Boa lifelong Chapel (1655 ), etc.. You can not pass by without feeling the pulse of Madeira traditional markets and shopping centers on the island. Initially, regional markets had been built to sell flowers, but today both locals and tourists alike will find everything their heart craving, from agricultural products to clothing, toys, music and much, much food. Try the markets of Porto Moniz, Santo da Serra and Ponta Delgada.
