City name means "muddy capital" in Malaysia, named due to location at the confluence of Klang and Gombak.

Kuala Lumpur is located in the heart of Selangor state. It is bordered by mountains on all sides, except in the east, this being the reason for Kuala Lumpur and surrounding areas are called "Klang Valley".

Kuala Lumpur is the seat of Federal Parliament in Malaysia. The city center was once the residence of the executive and judicial powers of the federation, but they have moved to Putrajaya starting in 1999. The city is also the cultural and economic center in Malaysia, due to its capital position, and being a first class city.
